My Major, Career Goals, and Certifications

I’m a nursing major. As of my first year I’m focused on completing all of the prerequisite courses to be able to apply to the nursing program at IUPUI. Ever since I was a little girl I’ve had my heart set on wanting to do something in the health or medical field, as I wanted to make a difference in peoples’ lives first-hand. I chose nursing because it allows me to have that direct patient interaction that I want, which in turn allows me to actually form relationships with my patients as I’m helping them to feel better. I’ve had my CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) and Dementia Care certifications since May 2022, and I’m BLS (Basic Life Support) certified. I worked in a nursing home for 8 months and I’ve been working on a Medical Observation unit in a hospital as a Patient Care Tech since October 2022.

First, I plan to be accepted to the nursing program at IUPUI and complete my BSN (Bachelors of Science in Nursing), so I’m able to sit for the NCLEX to officially have my nursing license. I then want to gain experience in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) and possibly go on to become a Nurse Practitioner. These goals are meaningful to me because I want to continue progressing through my career, and further pursuing my education is one way to do that. I’m also very passionate about wanting to work in the NICU because I’d be caring for a life that can’t yet speak for itself.
